Draft Magazine Covers - Cover 2

The serif font used in this magazine cover connotes luxury which aligns well with high end feminist fashion magazines. The white typography suggests cleanliness and elegance but also softness. In addition, the word ‘London’ situates the magazine culturally which suggests modern femininity and cosmopolitanism. However, I am aiming for a winter themed issue where the bright colours of the masthead and heading used feels summery and too bright. I believe that slightly muted colours would feel more premium on the covers. The cover line ‘off-duty edition’ connotes high fashion and elite style which positions feminism as sophisticated rather than radical. However, the script font is very decorative and slightly overpowering. It overlaps my background image which makes it look quite cluttered and limits readability. To improve, my cover image needs to be sleek with a smooth background or text which is simple but sends a powerful message.

In my image, the girl is styled in a patterned coat and sunglasses which signals confidence and control. the urban background also highlights independent modern city life. We can also see a clear feminist representation, which is what I am aiming for in my final piece as she is not sexualised, fully clothes and styled for herself and not the male gaze. The pose of adjusting her sunglasses also reinforces self-agency which is common in feminist media. However, the background includes vehicles, buildings and street clutter which undermines the luxury aesthetic. To improve, I need to darken or blur the background or take a new photo with a smoother background.

The current colour palette includes light blues, whites and beige which creates and spring/summer daytime feel. This clashes with my goal of a dark and wintery theme. To improve and align more with my target i need to create an image which has cooler undertones to create a wintery feel.
